Job Title: Certified Surgical Technologist Profession: Surgical

per Shift: 12 Experience: Two years CST experience required
License: Certified Surgical Technologist or Licensed Practical
Nurse preferred Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) required
Must-Have: - High school diploma or GED required - Graduate of an
accredited program in surgical technology required - National
certification required - Ability to read, write, and speak the
English language - Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
- Ability to collaborate with other health care providers in the
provision of patient care - Ability to multitask and function in
stressful and emergency situations - Knowledge of surgical
procedures required - Basic computer skills Description: The
Surgical Technologist Certified functions under the direction of
the registered professional nurse. Assists the health care team in
providing safe and culturally aware patient care. Possesses
knowledge, skill, and ability to perform duties within the context
of moderate to high acuity surgical cases. Exhibits acquisition of
additional surgical skills for progressively more difficult cases.
Demonstrates an efficient, organized surgical plan for assigned
cases. Takes initiative to discuss surgical plans with other
members of the health care team. Able to troubleshoot instruments
and equipment as needed. Anticipates any additional supplies or
equipment required for procedures. Ability to mentor, precept, or
train in various modalities. Participates in performance
improvement initiatives. Duties include preparation of the
operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care
environment. Maintains the sterile field and addresses other
patient safety concerns. Gathers required instruments and supplies
and serves as surgical assistant as needed. Assists with inventory,
ordering, and stocking operating rooms and additional perioperative
areas. Ensures compliance with all standards at all times. Call or
late coverage may be required related to the facility in which the
surgical technologist is working. Core Responsibilities and
Essential Functions include: Assisting the health care team in
providing safe, age-appropriate patient care. Providing
relationship-based patient-centered care that adapts service
delivery to reflect cultural diversity. Practicing using current
clinical practice standards under the supervision of the registered
nurse. Upholding all policies and procedures, including legal,
regulatory, and accreditation requirements. Supporting
evidence-based practice and ethical accountability. Demonstrating
teamwork and collaboration in a manner that promotes a positive
work environment. Serving as a patient advocate, including patient
care and safety. Assisting with the cleaning of the room between
cases and preparing for the next patient. Transporting patients as
required and providing comfort and safety measures. Maintaining a
positive attitude and flexibility in assignments. Checks supplies
and equipment needed for surgical procedures. Assists with room
set-up, including opening sterile supplies. Sets up sterile table
with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications in an
accurate and timely manner. Performs appropriate surgical counts
with the circulator. Actively participates in procedure
pause/time-out. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves; gowns and gloves the
surgeon and assistants as needed. Assists in draping the sterile
field and passing instruments to the surgeon during the procedure.
Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique throughout the
procedure. Prepares sterile dressings and participates in
post-procedure pause. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal
sterilization. Applies principles of asepsis to ensure prevention
of infection and safety. Prepares case carts according to procedure
and preference cards. Observes patients' conditions and reports any
changes to the physician and registered nurse. Plans for the next
steps in procedures as needed, demonstrating the ability to adjust
in emergencies. Prepares operating room and other areas for
receiving patients, including stocking and cleaning. Maintains
financial stewardship related to supplies and equipment. Completes
initial and annual competencies and participates in new training
related to new policies, processes, or equipment. Provides a
positive learning environment for students and new hires. Strives
to incorporate standards of behavior into daily work activity.
Maintains continuing education in the field as required. Assumes
responsibility for other duties as assigned. Cares for surgical
equipment and accessories while ensuring organization and
cleanliness of the surgical area. Maintains stock of medical
supplies as needed.
