Department Information


Housing and Residence Life is passionate about the Georgia Tech residential student experience. With 97% of all first-year students choosing to live on campus, we create spaces and opportunities for Yellow Jackets to grow and connect from their first day of college through their graduate studies. We are proud to support our students personal development and academic endeavors while providing a safe and comfortable living environment. Our department is a large and complex organization supporting over 8,700 on-campus residents among 49 traditional halls, suites, and apartments, some of which were constructed for the 1996 Summer Olympics. Our team of 200+ professional staff and 300+ student staff from six departments support residents directly and indirectly with their unique talents. We are housed within the Student Engagement and Well-Being division, that includes many student service offices. MissionHousing and Residence Life offers quality, safe, well-maintained residential facilities. We encourage, promote, and facilitate customer-focused programs and services that attract students to our facilities and Georgia Tech. We provide physical, programmatic, and technological systems to enhance the quality of life on campus, support the academic needs of resident students, and complement the academic goals of the institute.
Job Summary


This role will serve as the student-facing side of the department, handling safety-related concerns from students and aiding core staff when needed. The Safety Specialist will work closely with the Utility Specialist to address any safety issues related to the building's infrastructure and ensure that all safety protocols are met. In addition to critical systems maintenance, this position may require coordination with residence life, contractors, engineers, and other staff in a multi-craft environment. The position also oversees systems related to life safety, including fire alarms, fire sprinklers, portable extinguishers, AEDs, elevators, uninterruptible power systems (UPS), generators, outdoor lighting, exit signs, and any other critical equipment or systems.
Responsibilities


Critical System Testing & Troubleshooting

Regular testing of backup power systems.Diagnosing issues quickly to minimize downtime and ensure operational continuity. Life Safety Equipment Operation & Maintenance
Ensuring fire alarms, emergency lighting, exit signage, sprinklers, and other life safety systems are functional and compliant with safety codes.Performing routine inspections and maintenance as required by local regulations (e.g., NFPA standards). Coordination of Critical System Upgrades
Working with vendors, contractors, or internal teams to schedule and execute system improvements with minimal disruption to operations.Reviewing upgrade plans to ensure safety and compliance. Material Management
Tracking and ordering parts, tools, and consumables needed for system maintenance.Maintaining inventory and ensuring critical spares are always available.On-Call Duties
24/7Being available outside of normal working hours to respond to emergencies or urgent system issues. Perform Other Duties Assigned
A flexible catch-all for additional responsibilities like documentation, training, reporting, or supporting other teams.
Required Qualifications


Experience: At least 3 years of experience in critical systems, with significant experience in high-voltage and low-voltage systems and life safety systems.Education: Completion of an accredited apprenticeship program or equivalent technical training.

Pay Range: $59,795-$81,324/yr.

SKILLSknowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations; must have knowledge in machine shop and crane safety, working at heights safety, lock-out tag-out, confined space, trenching, ergonomics, and other general industry standards
